Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that helps minimise the signs of ageing, improve the appearance of acne scars and rejuvenate ageing skin. The SkinPen® Microneedling device causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodelling of collagen and elastin.

How does SkinPen® work?
SkinPen® works by creating a series of hundreds of microscopic channels into the dermis to stimulate the skin’s natural production of new collagen and elastin, helping skin to look and feel healthier. SkinPen® needles cycle at 100+ stamps/second, potentially creating 1600+ microchannels per second when moving the SkinPen®. This rejuvenates the skin from the inside out. The result is effective remodeling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact.

There are three phases to the wound-repair process:

  • Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to cleanse the wound, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.

  • Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.

  • Phase III: Remodeling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

What areas of the skin can be treated?
SkinPen’s® variable needle depth allows for maximum versatility, making it safe and effective to use on many parts of the body, including the face, neck and décolletage.

How is microneedling performed?
Microneedling can be performed using SkinPen®, a medical-grade, state-of-the-art Microneedling tool available only through medical and skin professionals. The treatment typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and number of areas treated and the degree of treatment requested by the client.

Is there downtime after Microneedling?
The total healing time depends on each individual. Most clients have some slight swelling and redness/pinkness (like a mild to moderate sunburn. Most people see their skin return to normal within 24 hours.

How many treatments are recommended?
The number of procedures required will be based upon your individual procedure goals and the overall health of your skin. Most clients receive a series of three procedures spaced about four weeks apart.

What can I expect during treatment?

The natural repair process of your own skin continues to progress through the course of several weeks meaning results will keep developing. Damage that has occurred over an extensive period of time won’t disappear immediately and dependant on your individual needs and concerns, you may not see the final desired result for up to six months following your final session. *Individual results will vary.

  • HOW MANY TREATMENTS OF SKIN PEN ARE RECOMMENDED?

    We will discuss your skin concerns and work a plan to suit your needs. You will notice a difference in your skin after just one treatment but we recommend booking a course for maximum results. Treatments will be spaced 4 weeks apart. After your course we can then determine how often you should continue treatment.

    HOW LONG SHOULD IT TAKE BEFORE I SEE RESULTS OF MY SKIN PEN TREATMENT?

    You will see results after the first treatment. In the days that follow your skin will look and feel plumper, firmer and more radiant . Your skin will continue to improve long after your treatment course is complete.

    IS THE SKINPEN TREATMENT PAINFUL?

    A local anaesthetic cream will be applied 20 minutes before treatment begins to ensure you are kept comfortable and pain free. After treatment you will look sunburnt and may feel a tightness to the treated area and pulsing in the hours that follow. This is not painful and is a great sign the treatment is working. Redness will fade over 24 hours and you are asked to apply a cream to the area in the days the follow.

    IS THIS TREATMENT SAFE?

    Yes. The SkinPen tips are sterilised and wrapped for protection until ready for use. This eliminates the risk of cross-contamination. The tip style used for micro-needling is determined after the patient is consulted and we examine the skin thickness in the areas where the treatment is needed. Treatments are performed in a clean and sanitised environment. Only one cartridge of needles are used per patient. Used cartridges are disposed of safely in a sharps bin.

    IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME AFTER SKIN PEN TREATMENTS?

    There is usually no downtime, but you will experience facial redness for 12-24 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately afterwards, however we do ask that you DO NOT wear make up OR exercise on the day of treatment. No swimming, saunas, steam rooms or sun-beds for at least 7 days. You may only apply the aftercare creams given to you within the 24 hour window after treatment. It is also advisable to use fresh clean pillow cases on the night of treatment.

    HOW SOON AFTER FILLER INJECTIONS/BOTOX CAN I HAVE MY SKIN PEN TREATMENT?

    It is recommended to leave at least 3 weeks between skin pen and filler injections/botox.

    CAN I HAVE THE SKIN PEN TREATMENT IN CONJUNCTION WITH IPL HAIR REMOVAL AND/OR REJUVENATION SETTINGS AND WHAT SHOULD BE THE TIME GAP?

    No. Please allow 4-6 week intervals between Dermapen and IPL.

    WHAT IS THE SKINS APPEARANCE AFTER THE TREATMENT?

    After the procedure your skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way to moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatments and within the next 24 hours the skin should look completely healed. Please ensure all aftercare instructions are followed correctly.

    ARE THEY ANY REASONS I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE THIS TREATMENT DUE TO MEDICAL ISSUES?

    If you have suffered with keloid or raised scarring, have a history of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions. A history of actinic (solar) keratosis. A history of Herpes Simplex infections. A history of diabetes. Any presence of raised moles, warts or any raised lesions on targeted area. Absolute contraindications include; scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases or cardiac abnormalities. Rosacea and blood clotting problems. Active bacterial or fungal infection. Immuno-suppression. Scars less than 6 months old.

    HOW DOES SKIN PEN TREAT WRINKLES, STRETCH MARKS, AND SCARS?

    Skin needling is based on the skin’s ability to heal itself after an injury. Right after the skin encounters any physical damage, it immediately eliminates the damaged tissue to replace it with new, healthy skin. Skin Pen induces small, controlled areas of damage to trigger the production of new collagen without the risks of scarring resulting in smoother and firmer skin.

    WHAT SHOULD I AVOID ON MY SKIN BEFORE AND AFTER THE TREATMENT?

    AHAs (glycolic Acid), retinol, acidic or active ingredients should not be used for two to three days before and after treatment to allow for maximum healing. Sun exposure is not recommended and sunscreen is encouraged. You must use the creams given to you for your aftercare!

    WHAT AFTERCARE MUST I FOLLOW?

    Once the session is complete, we will discuss with you what the proper after care routine is and how to ensure the best results of the procedure. However, we will provide you with Skinfuse Lift, which is a clean non-cytotoxic hydrogel used to prevent the skin from drying out post-treatment.
